The Benefits of Fresh Flowers
Filling your space with fresh flowers does a lot more than make it pretty. Today I want to look at some of the other benefits of having fresh or potted flowers in your living space!
I am currently reading Atomic Habits, and in this book James Clear dives deep into your environment. Your environment and the things you surround yourself with has a HUGE impact on your mood and day to day activities. Adding fresh flowers into the mix can change or accentuate certain moods. For example, if you have some fresh pastel-colored flowers it might cheer you up, and add a serenest to the room. On the flip side, maybe you’re having a lively gathering and want bright, showy colors to get everyone energized. If you are going for a certain mood, try to chose colors that reflect that.
When you decorate with fresh flowers your guests know you had some thought to the space you curated. It is the finishing touch that really completes a space. Do you have overnight guests staying? Add some fresh flowers to their room as a special touch or make a centerpiece to have on the table at dinner.
In recent years there has been a lot of research done on the benefits of being outdoors and spending more time in nature. Being able to bring a touch of nature inside your home brings that connection from the outside in. Flowers can be that little association in your home to the outside benefits of nature. This may have something to do with their stress relieving properties. A study done by Best Life showed that after five days the women given fresh flowers to have in their space felt more of a stress reduction than those receiving other “self-care” products.
Flowers are not just for women! A similar study done in an elevator gave out flowers to people walking in and out. Flowers were shown to produce positive reactions in both men and women.
Lastly, and the most amazing I think, is that flowers can help you remember long past parts of your life. The smell, feeling, colors, and textures of flowers connect parts of your brain with memories of your past. I hear lots of stories of grandmothers remembering being in their grandmother’s gardens smelling sweet peas, or the peonies that their mother had by the kitchen windows. Flowers have distinct scents that link us to memories. It is amazing.
Do you have any memories associated with flowers? Do you like to finish off a room with a fresh bouquet?
